In the previous publication, we saw how every serious investigation begins with the chronological reconstruction of the facts.Today, we take another step in that reconstruction.
One of the earliest documents in the chronology records a simple, yet fundamental fact.
The report of the irregularities came before my dismissal.
In June 2001, I formally reported irregularities that I had witnessed at Eni's Brazilian subsidiary.
At that moment, I simply complied with what the Company's own Code of Ethics required: to report conduct and situations that were inconsistent with its principles and values.
At that time, I could never have imagined that this decision would completely change my personal and professional life for the next twenty-five years.
This document occupies a crucial place in the chronology because it establishes an objective starting point.
First came the report.
Then came the events that ultimately led to my dismissal.
This sequence of events is not a matter of my interpretation.
It derives directly from the dates contained in the documents produced at the time.
It may seem like a minor detail.
But in any serious investigation, the chronological sequence of events is essential to understanding the context in which each decision was made.
That is precisely why I chose to begin this documentary series with the chronology of events.
In the coming publications, we will see how the documents produced immediately after my dismissal make it possible to reconstruct, step by step, the development of this story over nearly twenty-five years.
Once again, the purpose is not to persuade anyone.
The purpose is to make the documents available so that every reader may examine them and reach their own independent conclusions.
Because, from this point forward,
the documents will continue to speak for themselves.
To be continued on Wednesday.
